Why Two Cleansers?
The double cleanse principle is rooted in basic chemistry: like dissolves like. Oil-based substances (sebum, SPF, makeup, pollution-bound lipids) are not efficiently removed by water-based surfactant cleansers. By first dissolving oil-soluble impurities with an oil-based cleanser, then removing the resulting emulsion (plus water-soluble impurities) with a gentle water-based cleanser, you achieve genuinely clean skin without the barrier disruption of harsh surfactants.
The method originated in traditional Japanese and Korean skincare and has been validated by dermatological consensus as an effective evening cleansing approach for most skin types.
Step 1: Oil-Based Cleanser
Applies to dry skin before contact with water. Massaged in for 30–60 seconds then emulsified with a small amount of water before rinsing.
- Best for SPF and makeup removal: Micellar waters and foaming cleansers alone do not fully remove sunscreen ingredients — particularly mineral filters and waterproof formulations
- Formats: Cleansing oil, cleansing balm, micellar oil
- For oily skin: Lightweight cleansing oils (jojoba, squalane-based) that fully rinse clean; avoid heavy balms that leave residue
- For dry skin: Rich cleansing balms with emollient oils provide additional benefit
Step 2: Water-Based Cleanser
Applied to damp skin after the oil step has been rinsed. Removes sweat, water-soluble pollution particles, and any remaining oil-cleanser residue.
- pH target: 4.5–6.5 — protecting the acid mantle
- For oily/acne skin: Gel or low-foam cleanser with BHA or niacinamide
- For dry/sensitive skin: Cream or milk cleanser with no sulphates
- Avoid: Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), denatured alcohol, alkaline bar soaps
When to Double Cleanse (and When Not To)
| Situation | Double Cleanse? |
|---|---|
| Evening — wore SPF and/or makeup | Yes — always |
| Evening — no SPF, no makeup, minimal pollution exposure | Optional — single gentle cleanser is sufficient |
| Morning | No — morning rinse with water or single gentle cleanser; no need to remove the overnight barrier products with a full double cleanse |
| Sensitive or reactive skin without SPF | Consider skipping oil step — use micellar water on a cotton pad instead |
