What Is Skin Cycling?
Skin cycling is a structured, rotating nighttime skincare protocol developed and popularised by Dr. Whitney Bowe, a board-certified dermatologist. The core premise: by deliberately sequencing actives (exfoliation and retinoids) on separate nights — with mandatory recovery nights in between — you maximise the benefits of each active while giving your barrier time to recuperate between applications.
The standard 4-night cycle:
- Night 1 — Exfoliation Night: Chemical exfoliant (AHA or BHA) after cleansing
- Night 2 — Retinoid Night: Retinoid applied to dry skin after cleansing
- Nights 3 & 4 — Recovery Nights: Only barrier-supportive ingredients — ceramides, hyaluronic acid, peptides. No actives.
The Science Behind the Sequence
Applying an AHA immediately before a retinoid risks pH interference (AHAs work at pH 3–4; retinoids are deactivated below pH 5) and creates compounded irritation risk. Separating them by 24 hours eliminates both problems. Recovery nights allow the barrier lipids disturbed by actives to replenish before the next active application.
Night-by-Night Protocol
| Night | After Cleansing | Followed By |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1 (Exfoliation) | AHA (glycolic/lactic) or BHA (salicylic) | Light moisturiser — nothing else |
| Night 2 (Retinoid) | Retinoid (retinol, adapalene, or tretinoin) | Barrier moisturiser (ceramides) |
| Night 3 (Recovery) | Hyaluronic acid serum | Rich ceramide moisturiser ± peptides |
| Night 4 (Recovery) | Hyaluronic acid or peptide serum | Rich ceramide moisturiser ± facial oil |
Modifications by Skin Type
- Sensitive or reactive skin: Extend recovery to Nights 3, 4, and 5 before cycling back. Or eliminate AHA night and cycle: retinoid → 3 recovery nights.
- Oily/acne-prone skin: On recovery nights, use lightweight gel moisturisers + niacinamide serum instead of rich creams.
- Mature skin: Recovery nights can include peptide serums and facial oils for additional anti-ageing support.
- Retinoid beginners: Start with one retinoid night per 4-night cycle for the first month; increase to twice-weekly as tolerated.
Morning routine doesn't cycle: Every morning: gentle cleanser → Vitamin C serum → SPF. The cycle is PM only. AM consistency is what compounds the results of your cycling protocol over time.
